Doraemon is a Japanese manga series created by Fujiko F. Fujio (the pen name of Hiroshi Fujimoto) and Fujiko A. Fujio (the pen name of Motō Abiko) which later became an anime series and Asian franchise. The series is about a robotic cat named Doraemon, who travels back in time from the 22nd century to aid a schoolboy, Nobita Nobi or in Japan Nobi Nobita.

The series first appeared in December 1969, when it was published simultaneously in six different magazines. In total, 1,344 stories were created in the original series, which are published by Shogakukan under the Tentōmushi manga brand, extending to forty-five volumes. The volumes are collected in the Takaoka Central Library in Toyama, Japan, where both Fujiko Fujio were born.

Viz Media bought the license to the Doraemon manga in the 1990s for an English-language release, but ultimately decided not to publish it due to the possible controversy surrounding its content. However, Doraemon: Nobita's Dinosaur 2006 (The 26th film in the franchise) got a private screening in Washington D.C. in November 2008.

A majority of Doraemon episodes are comedies with moral lessons regarding values such as integrity, perseverance, courage, family and respect for elders. Several noteworthy environmental issues are often visited, including homeless animals, global warming, endangered species, deforestation, and pollution.

Topics such as dinosaurs, the flat Earth theory, wormhole traveling, Gulliver's Travels, and the history of Japan are often covered.

Where Doraemon "name" came from?

The name "Doraemon" translates roughly to "stray". Unusually, the name "Doraemon" is written in a mixture of two Japanese scripts: katakana and hiragana. "Dora" is from "dora kuma" (stray cat), and is a corruption of nora (stray). "Emon" is a component of male given names, such as Goemon, though no longer as popular in the past. "Dora" is not from dora meaning gong, but due to the homophony, the series puns on this, with Doraemon loving dorayaki.

Fact(s) about Doraemon that you need to know.

Doraemon is a cat-like robot from the 22nd century of the future. His favorite food is dorayaki, a sweet bean paste filled bun, and his birthday is 2112-9-3(September 3, 2112) at the Matsushiba Robot Factory, he is also know by the name "Ding-dong".

"The Doraemons" story arc (and the 2112: The Birth of Doraemon short film), it is revealed that Doraemon's original paint color was yellow. After getting his ears gnawed off by a robot mouse, he slipped into depression on top of a tower, where he drank a potion labeled "sadness". As he wept, the yellow color washed off and his voice changed due to the potion. The real Doraeomon voice actually quite rough.

Doraemon was sent back to the 20th century because Nobita's grandson can't bear to see his grandfather suffer. So he sent Doraemon to help out with Nobita's troubles.

Some tools that Doraemon and Nobita frequently used:

*Takekoputa: Small Propellers.
- When people put them on their heads, they can fly freely. It seems that the structure of the propeller is very simple, but is not well known. Using a propeller, you can fly 600 kikometers at 80 kilometers per hour, like flying from Tokyo to Osaka in seven and a half hours.

*Taimu-mashin: The Time Machine.
- Doraemon and his friends can use the door to go into the future or the past. They can even decide when and where they will go. However, they don't always end up where they planned. The entrance and exit to the time machine is in Nobita's desk.

*Dokodemo-doa: Everywhere Door.
- If they open this door and say the name of the place they wish to go, they will go there as they pass through it. But the door looks like an old weak wooden door , once it was even thrown out with the trash. But it is so convenient, I am sure modern businessmen/women would love to have

*Taimu-furoshiki: Time Wrapping Cloth.
- It looks like an ordinary wrapping cloth, but has great power. It has two sides, but its effect depends on which side you touch things with. On one side any item you touch the cloth to will become newer, and the other side will make an object older. If you put the wrapping cloth on persons, they will become younger or older only in their appearance.

*Moshimo-bokkus: The "If" Box.
- It just looks like a telephone box (booth). If they say "***** world, please" to the receiver and exit the box, the world changes to what they said. The world ends when they say "Please go back" to the box. So they can't go back when the box is broken.
